Building Trust: Humans of Public Service
Building Trust with Citizens: A discussion and celebration of public servants
In recent years, the public perception of the government has been on a decline. The general public could point to the questionable management of the COVID-19 response, crashing unemployment websites, or limited availability of Paycheck Protection Program benefits. These experiences, combined with a complex organization structure, make it easy to place these frustrations at the government’s doorstep and less so on a specific agency or department.
Despite the declining trust in the government, there has been a group of public servants, non-profits, and industry partners pushing for greater focus on the citizen experience, to include modernizing public facing websites, transforming public service delivery, and prioritizing citizen outcomes (instead of outputs). On December 13th, 2021, years of pushing led to the signing of a Customer Experience Executive Order, which included 36 commitments to improve service delivery across 17 agencies.
Brian Whittaker, a former GSA Technology Executive, has spent the majority of his time in public service leading organizations that prioritized improving how the public interacts with our government. These roles exposed him to a variety of agencies and projects that range from COVID-19 Frequently Asked Questions to Civil Rights Complaints. Today he will highlight those organizations he has led, the citizen focused projects he has worked on and a new opportunity to bring humanity back to government.
