Talking Tour of Old City (All-Ivy)
Join fellow Harvard / Ivy alumni, friends and guests for a “Talking” Tour of Old City based on Birch’s Views of Philadelphia at The Philadelphia Print Shop in downtown Wayne on October 23rd from 5:30-7:30 pm. Introduction by David Mackey, host, with presentation by Mike Teti at 6:15pm. Light refreshments will be served.
In 1794 the widely known English artist William Birch and his son Thomas immigrated to Philadelphia and created a set of prints capturing the scenes of Philadelphia when it was the political, financial and cultural capital of the country. Birch himself commented on the city's history: “It has in this short time, been raised, as it were, by magic power, to the eminence of an opulent city, famous for its trade and commerce, crouded in its port, with vessels of its own producing, and visited by others from all parts of the world.”
During our “Talking” Tour we will consider several of Birch’s first set of 29 authentic 18th century views including Pennsylvania Hospital, Library and Surgeons Hall, Bank of the US, Philosophical Hall, the Old Court House and Christ Church, the Water Works, the New Theatre, City Tavern and the Bank of Pennsylvania.
