Longwood Gardens: Science Talk and Stroll
Join us at Longwood Gardens for an inside look at how science shapes one of the world’s leading public gardens.
Kate Santos, Ph.D., Associate Vice President of Science, will share how Longwood’s science program operates at the intersection of horticulture, ecology, agriculture, and conservation to address global challenges—from biodiversity loss to climate change—while translating that work into extraordinary garden experiences. This is a rare opportunity to explore how a world-renowned institution leverages science not only to steward a living collection of over 13,000 taxa, but to influence the future of sustainable landscapes at scale.
The program will begin with a presentation in the Conservatory’s Music Room, followed by a guided, science-focused tour of the gardens—revealing the research, strategy, and decision-making behind what guests see and experience. Following the tour, attendees are welcome to stay on the property for a self-guided tour or lunch.
Kate Santos is the Associate Vice President of Science at Longwood Gardens, where she leads the integration of science into the care, design, and long-term stewardship of the Gardens. She oversees multidisciplinary teams spanning conservation horticulture and living collections, land stewardship and ecology, soils and compost systems, floriculture production, and science communication—ensuring that Longwood’s landscapes and guest experiences are grounded in rigorous science, ecological integrity, and long-term resilience. She holds a B.S. in Plant Biology from University of New Hampshire and a Ph.D. in Environmental Horticulture from University of Florida, complemented by certification in medicinal plants through Cornell University.
